March 20th marks the first day of spring! When spring comes around, for many it is time to clean out the clutter of your home and start planning more activities for the great outdoors. We have several tips for you that will keep these activities environmentally conscious.

Spring Clean the Natural Way

Avoid using cleaners with harsh chemicals that can be unpleasant to breathe and are harmful to our environment. Opt for green cleaners that can be purchased anywhere, or to save money, make them at home.

“Spring!” For an Energy Upgrade

You may not have it in your budget to replace all your appliances or install solar panels, but there are some easy and inexpensive ways you can reduce your energy costs:

  • Replace light bulbs with efficient CFLs or LEDs
  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Shade your windows when it is hot, and allow the sun to come in on cooler days.

Wash Your Dirty Car

You might assume it will save more water to wash your car at home. Even though it is less friendly on your wallet, car washes are more efficient when it comes to water use. The high pressure washers allow for use of less water, and many will send the runoff to nearby treatment centers so it can be reused. If you still prefer to wash your car at home, make sure you turn off the water when you aren’t using it, park on gravel or grass to help filter the water, and avoid soaps that state they are harmful.

Start Your Compost

The EPA estimates that each American throws away an average of 1.3 pounds of food scraps daily, and this type of waste accounts for 24% of our nation’s landfills. Composting will reduce this waste and give you fertile soil that can be used in growing your home garden. Several items are compostable, including food scraps, lawn waste, coffee grounds, egg shells, wood clippings, and simple paper products.

Plant Your Garden

Having a home garden is good for the environment, good for your wallet, and good for your health by providing fresh fruits and veggies year round. Research what grows best in your area during different seasons. Building an affordable greenhouse can expand what you are able to grow.
